How are you personally affected by Public Health Careers?

This is a career path that I have chosen, and am passionate about inspiring others to explore this career path as a rewarding option. At a point in my past, I felt very “boxed in” and although I was excited about public health and wanted to have a great impact, I was not encouraged to spread my wings and share my ideas and vision. I had a choice to conform to that way of doing things, or break the box and strive to do more. The first big step was difficult, but it got easier.

One step led to another, and before long I began to feel like I was actually making a difference with the work that I was doing. I’ve never looked back with any sense of regret.

What is your take on Public Health Careers?

I coach public health graduates who have had difficulty getting into the field of public health following more traditional career paths (local and federal government employers). There are many reasons for these challenges such as lack of experience, difficulty transitioning into public health from a different career field, and lack of vision to see other opportunities. I try to lead by being a visible example for others. I use my podcast as a resource to open the eyes of my audience and inspire them to explore the many career possibilities and think outside of the box. For example, I interviewed a variety of guests from diverse backgrounds to discuss their public health career journeys. I also occasionally host a virtual public health entrepreneurship expo, where my co hosts are other public health entrepreneurs who share their business models. When I began preparing for the expo, I found one of your articles and used it as a reference to introduce this topic on one of my podcast episodes.
