Today at noon ET/9:00 a.m. PT, I’ll be presenting a new SuperCrowdHour on how ordinary investors can make money while making a difference—and how you can get started with as little as $10. Watch the webinar live in the player at the top of this post.
Impact investing was once largely the province of institutions and wealthy investors. Crowdfunding has changed that. Today, everyday investors can put relatively small amounts directly into businesses they believe can create both financial returns and meaningful change.
I use a deliberately simple definition of impact: a change that results from your investment.
Your definition of “good” is yours. Investors can reasonably disagree about priorities while still applying the same basic idea: capital can help create outcomes we want to see.
In today’s SuperCrowdHour, I focus on three enormous opportunities.
First is fighting climate change. Modern prosperity remains deeply dependent on fossil fuels. Even electric vehicles typically draw electricity from a grid that includes fossil-fuel generation. That means the transition requires much more than simply buying EVs. We need innovation and investment in solar, wind, storage, cleaner transportation and other technologies capable of accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.
Second is improving public health. Advances in genetics, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, digital health and other technologies continue opening possibilities for better care. Just as importantly, innovations that deliver effective care at lower cost can expand access to millions of people. The extraordinary acceleration of vaccine development between the 1918 influenza pandemic and COVID-19 illustrates how dramatically medical innovation can progress—and how much opportunity for improvement remains.
Third is improving prosperity for others. Sometimes the business itself is the impact. A growing company can create jobs, increase incomes, strengthen families and build community wealth. Education can unlock economic opportunity. Employee ownership can change who shares in a company’s success. Investing in diverse founders and underserved communities can also help address longstanding disparities in access to capital.
That brings us to an important distinction between values alignment and direct impact.
ESG information can help investors align public-market portfolios with their environmental, social and governance priorities. But when you buy a publicly traded stock, your money usually goes to another shareholder—not to the company. With a crowdfunding investment in a primary offering, by contrast, your capital goes to the business to hire people, purchase equipment, expand production, develop technology or enter new markets.
That shorter connection between investor, company and outcome is one reason I find investment crowdfunding so compelling.
And you no longer need to be wealthy to participate. Some opportunities allow investments measured in tens rather than thousands of dollars. The presentation even includes an example of getting started with a $10 investment.
Of course, investing involves risk, and nothing in the webinar is individual investment advice. But if you’ve ever wondered whether impact investing is really accessible to you, watch the SuperCrowdHour in the player above at noon ET/9:00 a.m. PT.
I’ll show you how the pieces fit together—and why even a small investment can matter.
