Goal: On #GivingTuesday, our goal was to retire 2,000 tonnes of CO2, which based on the average price per tonne of $9.07 on the Cool Effect platform, is equivalent to $18,140 contributed to projects. Since we exceeded our specific goal for #GivingTuesday, we increased our overarching holiday season goal to reduce 10,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to a total of $54,420. We are on our way to reaching that goal, but still have a gap to fill!
Progress: To-date, including the funds raised on #GivingTuesday and the weeks following, Cool Effect has retired 5,840 tonnes of its 10,000-tonne goal for the season. Based on the average price per tonne of $9.07, that is equivalent to $52,969. Not included in that number is $11,030 raised on #GivingTuesday as part of Cool Effect’s Facebook fundraiser.
Project: Cool Effect is a San Francisco Bay Area 501(c)(3) non-profit that allows individuals to create a tangible impact on climate change through a digital platform, providing consistent funding to the highest-quality carbon-reducing projects around the world.
For #GivingTueday, Cool Effect launched the One Hot Minute, One Cool Effect campaign, which aims to encourage individuals to offset their carbon footprint or offset a loved one’s carbon emissions as a holiday gift, and benefit all of Cool Effect’s carbon reduction projects and the communities they are in. The initial goal was to reduce 2,000 tonnes on #GivingTuesday. Cool Effect exceeded that goal on #GivingTuesday, closing out the day retiring just over 2,000 tonnes on CoolEffect.org (2,002 by the end of the day), and separately also raised $11,030 of its $15,000 goal on the Facebook Fundraiser. Because the response was so strong, the overarching goal for the holiday season was extended to retire 10,000 tonnes.
Use of funds: Funds raised on #GivingTuesday and through the One Hot Minute, One Cool Effect campaign will be divided among all of Cool Effect’s carbon reduction projects across the globe. Funds support initiatives like renewable wind power in Costa Rica and installing efficient cookstoves in Honduras.
Anecdote: Cool Effect was founded on the passionate belief that individual support of projects will create a cumulative effect that will reduce and prevent carbon pollution. Like the Butterfly Effect, The Ripple Effect, and others, a single action can have global impact. The organization’s mission is to ignite planet-sized change.
The inaugural project on Cool Effect’s platform is Proyecto Mirador, a Gold Standard carbon emission reduction project. Cool Effect co-founders Dee and Richard Lawrence saw first-hand how simple technologies like cookstoves can fight climate change by verifiably reducing hundreds of tonnes of CO₂. At the same time, they saw that a project like Mirador is a powerful way to improve family health and economics while creating jobs and local businesses. Proyecto Mirador has been able to expand and bring clean cooking to families all over Honduras because of the sale of its carbon credits, and just one stove saves the planet 15 tonnes of carbon pollution.
