Winners Announced at First #HackQuantum in Lagos, Nigeria as part of the Decade Of Women Campaign to Harness Frontier Technologies to Transform Women’s Lives Worldwide
Press Release – On International Women’s Day in New York, The Decade Of Women launched a solutions and action campaign – dedicated to completing the gender equity revolution. The campaign is distinct in focusing on levering the vital power of frontier technologies across blockchain and digital assets to achieve economic engagement and financial independence of all women. This effort will require the unlocking of new capital to allow frontier technologies to scale. The laser-sharp focus is on actionable, large-scale initiatives to harness the power of exponential new technology to advance the Decade Of Women’s mission to empower women worldwide.
The global launch for this campaign to identify exponential, innovative ideas was held in Lagos, Nigeria on May 5-6. The #HackQuantum hackathon held at the #Workstation co-working space brought together over 100 women and men technologists, investors and futurists into 15 teams to co-create moonshot solutions to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was not a traditional hackathon – the scope of the challenge included early-stage ideas for a Blockchain solution, innovative business model and a timeline for scaling and sustained development addressing one, or multiple aspects of any of the SDGs for women. The teams were judged on the following criteria: originality, innovation, impact, scalable impact of idea, and ideas that support cross-silo, cross-industry collaboration.
The winning teams were Team Quantum, led by Ajibola Oseni which proposed an innovative education solution for poor girls, and Team Justice Fund, comprising Umar Alli, Peculiar Ediomo-Abassi, Abiodun Dabiri, Grace Falabi, and Ejeahakouye Ikeuya, who came up with an impressive Blockchain solution for addressing violence against women.
Dr. Jane Thomason, Global Ambassador, Abt Associates, a leading expert in frontier technologies and the recipient on March 8th of the Decade Of Women first Quantum Impact Champion award said, “I am so pleased to be launching this challenge in Nigeria. It has been a powerful demonstration of the imagination and creativity of young Nigerians who see the potential of technology to transform women’s lives. The passion and commitment of everyone in the room was overwhelming, the understanding of the real problems for women was palpable. It was hard to pick winners as all the teams deserve to go forward.”
Winners received cash prizes of $3,000 each, an opportunity to showcase their solutions in front of impact investors, NGO’s, philanthropists, charities, and enterprise executives at the Africa Blockchain Conference hosted by Fintech Worldwide. They will also receive ongoing support to develop their solution further in the #DecadeOfWomen accelerator program.
Following the Africa Blockchain Conference, will be followed by a high level reception for dignitaries, funders, and leading women to launch the #DecadeOfWomen global open innovation platform. This will be a bold and ambitious ongoing collaboration site to find the cutting edge solutions that will achieve the goals of Decade of Women.
Fareed Arogundade, Founder, Workstation, a tech-enabled coworking space provider said he was excited that his company was able to partner with the DecadeOfWomen for their first Blockchain hackathon in Africa. “I believe Blockchain technology will help transform and increase the level of trust and transparency that we lack across key emerging market cities, including Lagos, Nigeria. Decade Of Women will also help elevate the status of women in these key emerging market cities through the initiatives they will be implementing using Blockchain technology”.
5th Element Group is partnering with Abt Associates and Fintech Worldwide to host in 2018 a #HackQuantum series of up to a dozen hackathons across major cities in developing and developed nations around the world.
