WhiteHat Magazine Announces Crowdfunding Campaign
Raising Funds to Launch a New Digital Publication Examining Tech for Social Good
JULY 16, 2015 – Salt Lake City, Utah: Digital media startup WhiteHat Magazine announced that it is raising funds via crowdfunding website Indiegogo to finish development and pay journalists for coverage of technology’s role in global social issues. The company set out to raise $20,000 on Indiegogo to launch an innovative digital and trans-media publication focused on putting humanity back at the center of technology journalism.
“The business of journalism is no longer about top-down models of broadcasting information—it’s about creating a community around shared discussions and concerns,” said WhiteHat Magazine Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief Chrisella Herzog. “We are excited to launch this crowdfunding campaign, to take a globally connected digital audience and create a community around these topics and around our new publication.”
Chrisella Herzog was recently interviewed about the inspiration behind WhiteHat Magazine, as well as its editorial coverage, in P3 Utah’s P3 People Podcast, available here.
The internet has become a new public space, and technology has created new hierarchies of power. Accordingly, journalism must “cover technology as a human rights and political issue as if it were Parliament. It is just as interesting and about ten thousand times more important,” said Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, in a speech at the University of Oxford. “We have to stop coverage of technology being about queuing for an iPhone and make it about society and power. We need to explain these new systems of power to the world and hold them accountable.”
“Technology is constantly changing, with the result that what a new technology’s original intention might have been and what its implementation becomes is not always the same. Twitter began as a group SMS service, and turned into a product that has changed nations,” said WhiteHat Magazine Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer Kyle Herzog. “For developers and entrepreneurs alike, it is important to be exposed to new ideas and innovations from across the globe. The process of building and creating new products cannot happen in a vacuum.”
The majority of the funds—and the primary goal of launching this campaign—will be used to pay writers and journalists from around the world; the rest of the funds, after covering the cost of crowdfunding fees and perks, will be dedicated to building a talented technical and design team to create a beautiful and digitally innovative publication.
WhiteHat Magazine will be hosting a party in mid-August to celebrate the crowdfunding campaign. Details soon to follow.
