What Do You Think of This Music? I Genuinely Want to Know!
Using Suno's AI for Music, I Created Dozens of Songs
Music for SuperCrowdChicago
Next week, The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation, is hosting SuperCrowdChicago. We’re excited for the event.
Finding music that can bring positive vibes to the crowd at events can be challenging. It is tricky to navigate the rights. Recently, an AI startup called Suno began offering a tool allowing ordinary folks to create music in any genre with lyrics they write or inspire using just a few keywords.
So, I’ve created two playlists for SuperCrowdChicago. One is a collection of songs about Chicago, and the other is about the exceedingly romantic notion of impact crowdfunding. When you hear these songs, you won’t likely wonder why Taylor Swift doesn’t sing about regulated investment crowdfunding more often.
There are two ways to use Suno. The default mode allows you to give it an up-to-200-character description of the song you want, including ideas for the lyrics and the music. It is a bit limiting, but I get the impression from playing with the system that the Suno robots like this approach more.
The custom mode allows you to provide lyrics and separately give Suno guidance on the music. You can also name your song. I used ChatGPT 4.o to generate the lyrics based on my thoughts. So, I feel like the ideas are generally mine, but the poetry and music were created for me.
As a paying subscriber to Suno, the app says I have all the rights to use the music on YouTube, Spotify and at the event. I’m not infringing on anyone’s music rights by using theirs without permission.
I learned how to do this with beginning proficiency, creating an album of silly love songs for Gail, my wife of 35 years. Songs include “Sixty Is the New Sexy” and “Your Brains Make You Sexy.”
While I created a ten-song playlist of Chicago-themed music for SuperCrowdChicago, I’ve downloaded the music video with the lyrics and uploaded that to YouTube so you can watch it here:
Frankly, what Suno creates is pretty amazing. There is no risk of any of these songs playing on the radio anytime soon, but I find myself tapping my toes or my fingers while listening at times. You can watch the whole playlist on YouTube here.
In addition to songs with a Chicago theme, I’ve used AI to create a playlist of a dozen songs about social impact, impact crowdfunding and diversity. While I confess, I’ve spent too much time playing with these toys, er, tools, it is fun to see what the AI can come up with rather quickly.
Because I genuinely want your feedback about this music, I’ve created a chat forum thread for this discussion. Please jump in!
