We Live in an AI World with Exciting New Features and Scary Implications
Will AI Soon Deliver the 'Singularity' and with It Utopia or a 'Terminator'-Style End to the World? Why I Now Doubt It!

Yesterday, I shared the Superpowers for Good episode below—with one big difference. Yesterday, it was in English. Today, it is in Spanish.
The Spanish version strikes me as being pretty good. It’s been a long time since I described my Spanish as fluent (and, if I’m being honest, I’m not sure I ever was—even though I could pass briefly for a native of Argentina when I lived there 40 years ago). I’d love to hear from people who speak Spanish more fluently to know what you think of the translated version.
Here’s yesterday’s episode, in English.
This version can be instantly switched in this YouTube player to any of nine languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish or Portuguese. To choose your language, start the video above and then click on the settings gear wheel. Expand the “Audio Track” option to choose your language.
For months, I’ve been passively monitoring the development of AI translation tools for video. The service has been available for a fee for some time. The reality is, we’re not close to making enough money from the show to pay for translation.
Then, last week, YouTube sent me an email giving me the option to opt in to the free translation service. I clicked the button, not knowing what to expect. Now I kinda know. And so do you.
I think this is an amazing technology that will benefit a lot of people. That said, I feel for paid translators and interpreters. Technology is clearly eating into their ability to earn a living.
Here, I need to note something. One of the smartest and most convincing entrepreneurs I have ever met was, 25 years ago, developing a technology to assist humans in translating faster and more effectively. He told me something prophetic-sounding. He spoke it like a mantra: machine translation is impossible. It will never happen. Almost 15 years ago, I remember when I had the frequent occasion to use Google Translate to translate English to Spanish. It was terrible. And then one day, it wasn’t. It was pretty darn good. One day crappy. The next day passable. Now, it approaches wonderful. The importance of this aside will become apparent in a minute.
Artificial Intelligence is providing me with daily help. I have measured improvements in my health, demonstrated help with relationships, found near-constant help managing my workflow, made more profitable investments, and enjoyed plenty of entertainment.
Earlier this month, I read a book about AI that blew me away! I want to recommend it to all of you.
You can even buy the ebook version from Bookshop.org here.
I have to tell you I haven’t loved a book this much in a long time. To be clear, it is a stinging indictment of the billionaire culture in Silicon Valley, much of it centered around AI and the mythical “singularity.”
The book left me convinced that a super-intelligent, fully sentient entity is not in the offing in our lifetimes—if ever. The persistent fears we face about machines taking over the world and killing all the humans that resist—stop it, says Adam Becker. Not gonna happen.
He also says the good things that might come—magical and instant solutions to poverty, climate change and global public health—also not happening.
He admits and I agree, that AI will improve and will do two things. It will make the lives of affluent people better and use a crap ton of energy. (I don’t think that was how he phrased it.)
He concludes that the problem rests squarely on the existence of billionaires who advocate for using more—much more energy—regardless of the source, relying on the myth of singularity to save us from climate change. It’s a must-read.
Still, I wonder, will Adam’s prophecy hold up better than my entrepreneur friend’s prophecy from 25 years ago? I think so, but we’ll see.
