Devin: What is your superpower?

Tyrus: Ability to take complex, overwhelming ideas and distill them into simple, actionable steps.

Entrepreneurs often face a daunting challenge when it comes to raising capital to grow their businesses. In today’s episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tyrus Shivers, CEO of Legacy Wealth Capital Group Inc., about how his organization helps entrepreneurs overcome these obstacles. His approach is both methodical and inspiring, offering practical solutions for founders who want to scale while staying true to their purpose.

Tyrus emphasizes the importance of making a business “investable, bankable, and built to scale.” His team at Legacy Wealth Capital Group dives deep into the structure of each client’s business, ensuring that systems, processes, people, and financial controls are in place to support growth. He shared, “We help everyday entrepreneurs, everyday founders look deeply into their business and put in the right systems... so they can scale and continue to grow that business as they receive the capital to do so.”

One standout strategy Tyrus employs is educating entrepreneurs about alternative funding options, such as Regulation Crowdfunding (Reg CF), which allows businesses to raise up to $5 million annually from both accredited and non-accredited investors. This approach opens doors for founders who don’t fit the mold of traditional bank or venture capital funding. He noted, “They don’t even think about the crowd. They don’t know the crowd exists… So, one of the key things we like to do at Legacy Wealth is to educate first.”

Tyrus’s commitment to empowering underserved communities was especially inspiring. Drawing from his upbringing in South Alabama, he understands the systemic hurdles faced by minority and underserved entrepreneurs. His mission is clear: “I want to make sure the people that come from where I come from, the people who look like me, also have the same opportunities.”

By focusing on education and creating access to capital, Tyrus and Legacy Wealth Capital Group are helping entrepreneurs turn their dreams into reality. Whether through crowdfunding or other innovative approaches, his work is a testament to the power of combining purpose with business.

How to Develop Simplifying Complexity As a Superpower

Tyrus’s superpower is his ability to take complex, overwhelming ideas and distill them into simple, actionable steps. In today’s episode, Tyrus described this gift as “taking a lot of information, complex information, and being able to make it direct, simple, and efficient for other people.” He explained that this superpower applies across his work—whether guiding entrepreneurs, mentoring in the church, or supporting youth. He added, “When people usually come and talk to me, they just dump on me… While you’re dumping, I’m putting the pieces together.”

One of Tyrus’s clients, a behavioral health center owner, came to him feeling overwhelmed. Despite generating $1.2 million in annual revenue, her business wasn’t profitable, and she was stretched thin. Tyrus focused first on her mindset, helping her understand the importance of self-care and prioritizing her needs as a leader. This simple but profound shift empowered her to make small but critical changes in her business, including structuring bonuses around profitability. Within 18 months, her revenue grew to $1.8 million, with over $400,000 in profit.

Tips for Developing This Superpower:

  1. Practice Active Listening: Pay attention to the details when others share their challenges.

  2. Seek Simplicity: Focus on identifying the next logical step rather than trying to solve everything at once.

  3. Develop Empathy: Understand the emotional and practical needs of those you’re supporting.

  4. Organize Information: Train yourself to mentally categorize and prioritize information as you hear it.

  5. Communicate Clearly: Break down complex ideas into direct, actionable advice others can easily follow.

By following Tyrus’s example and advice, you can make simplifying complexity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.

Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!
