Goal: $1,500
Progress: $1,142
Project: The funds will be going towards 5 families that are currently living in Barangy Catmon Ormoc City. The Lumapas, Duazo, Neri, Guanzo, and Arellano families currently live off 1 to 2 meals (primarily rice) per day. Our goal is to help reverse this cycle of poverty by providing these families with a means to become self-reliant. By giving these families a piglet and 4 months of feed, we are providing them with an opportunity to later collect more income than they would have ever received in years of their life. After 4 months when the pig is fully grown, the pig can be sold for 10,000 Philippine Pesos/190 USD. The family can either use that money as income or invest in another piglet and feed. If the family chooses to take the investment route, that 1000-1500 Pesos can make a significant difference for a Filipino family. This project is especially valuable because help is needed, and yet no one is really aware of their struggle simply because there is no coverage. This project is empowering these families to get out of poverty by giving them an extra boost, something that everybody needs at some point in their lives.
Pigs Against Poverty is also committed to serving local businesses, that’s why we source and purchase from local pig breeders. We do not ship piglets from outside sources.
Use of funds: A portion of the funds will be spent on purchasing the “perks” associated with our campaign. The rest will be spent purchasing piglets and feed for families in the Philippines. The average piglet costs 1500-3000 Philippine Pesos/30-57 USD Feed for 4 months costs 4000-5000 Philippine Pesos/75-94 USD. We will use whatever money remains after purchasing our perks to assist all 5 families, or more if we can.
Anecdote: The Arellano Family is one of the families we have identified to receive a piglet with our project. Leonilo Arellano is 48 years old and illiterate, and is married to Elisa (51) They have 3 children, ages 23, 17, and 13. The family currently works as rice field labourers, and their goal is to have permanent work and sufficient income for their daily needs.
