Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors to Participate in Charitable Crowdfunding Campaign for Veterans Day
Participation in #DayForTheBrave will help Military Outdoors raise funds to support our nation’s veterans
November 3, 2015, San Francisco, CA – Military Outdoors, a program that helps veterans access the outdoors, today announced its participation in a new movement to give back to those who have given so much for the United States: our nation’s 22 million veterans. On Veterans Day, November 11, Military Outdoors will take part in #DayForTheBrave, the nation’s first online Giving Event to exclusively raise funds and awareness for charities serving the needs of veterans, servicemembers and their families.
Hosted by Razoo at www.DayForTheBrave.org, the campaign provides a digital platform for leading veteran-focused nonprofits to engage donors and compete for prizes. #DayForTheBrave is an opportunity for America to rally around veterans beyond giving thanks on Veterans Day, by supporting the very organizations that are committed to their care.
“By conducting outings at a relatively low cost,” said Robert Vessels, Sierra Club’s Military and Veteran Coordinator, “critical financial support from foundations and generous individuals provides more opportunities to get veterans outdoors.”
Through #DayForTheBrave, Military Outdoors not only has the opportunity to fundraise directly from individual donors, but also compete for major prizes based on its crowdfunding success. The Razoo Foundation has seeded $25,000 in grants to the #DayForTheBrave prize pool, which will continue to grow as additional corporations and foundations join the movement as key partners. Together with individual donors, these partnerships will contribute to even greater impact for the veteran community.

About Military Outdoors
The goal of Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors is to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the skills, exposure, knowledge, and confidence to access the great outdoors. Time spent in nature not only promotes mental health, emotional resiliency, and leadership development prior to deployment, it provides invaluable know-how to help returning vets enjoy and engage with nature upon returning from overseas. Many veterans experience difficulty adjusting to civilian life after leaving the service. Time spent outdoors eases the transition and improves both mental and social skills.
Trip participants leave the expeditions with an improved sense of social well-being, an improved sense of an opportunity for mission and camaraderie in life after service, reduced stress and a more positive outlook on life. Participants also gain transferrable leadership skills and confidence for work and actions beyond the outdoors, helping to bridge the gap between service and society.
