Obama Foundation Partners with Oak Park Based Nonprofit Women’s Global Education Project to Create Short Documentary Film, Rebecca’s Story
Press Release – February 15, 2019, Chicago, IL – Chicago based nonprofit Women’s Global Education Project (WGEP) is thrilled to announce they have been invited by Michelle Obama’s Global Girls Alliance, an Obama Foundation initiative, to take part in a campaign to raise funds and awareness for girls’ education which will launch on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2019. For the campaign, the Obama Foundation produced a short film featuring the work of WGEP entitled Rebecca’s Story, which will be released as part of a series of five short films all focused on the barriers girls around the globe face while seeking an education. WGEP Founder and Executive Director Amy Maglio states, ”We are so grateful for the opportunity that Global Girl’s Alliance has given us with this short film. Sharing Rebecca’s Story will allow us to educate people and reach a far greater audience – both the girls we strive to help as well as those who can join us in this movement.”
Filmed in Kenya by Namuh Media, Rebecca’s Story profiles a young mother who was a victim of FGM (female genital mutilation) at the age of 12, a procedure long practiced in her country where it is performed on adolescent girls as part of a right of passage into womanhood. For Rebecca and so many other young girls, this procedure also marked the end of her education and the beginning of the fulfillment of the traditional duties of becoming a wife and mother. WGEP worked with Rebecca in their Alternative Rite of Passage program to help ensure that her daughter has a different passage in life, which is what they’ve done and continue to do for thousands of young Kenyan women.
WGEP’s Alternative Rite of Passage program for keeping young female adolescents on a path towards continuing education has proven both effective and promising while demonstrating that it is possible to eliminate FGM. WGEP invites everyone to view this important film and to support the Global Girls Alliance efforts to empower girls and women to transform the world.
