Let me tell you why there is no Devin's Impact Pick of the Week
Today I Share My Process With Everyone
There is no Devin’s Impact Pick of the Week this week. I’ve spent all day screening, filtering, reading and analyzing. None of the new offerings this week meet my high minimum standard. Before I put my money into a deal—or more importantly, share with our Impact Members what I’ve picked—I want to be darn sure the deal is fair.
By the way, if you have checked out our SuperCrowd Investment Directory, I encourage you to do it. Every live Reg CF offering is in the directory with a due diligence report. You can find every Devin’s Impact Pick of the Week that is still live. Impact Members get free access. Others can get a day pass for just $4.58. Check it out!
If you’ve read a lot of my pick reports, you know that the scores typically fall between 6 and 8 on a ten-point scale. There are no perfect tens! Every deal offered under Regulation Crowdfunding has risk. I’ve lost every penny of my investment a few times (not nearly as often as companies pay back every penny with interest or appreciation). So, I take due diligence seriously.
Here’s what I screen for:
Real social impact or support for a woman founder or an underrepresented founder
A minimum investment of $151 or less
Solid prospects for repayment or appreciation
Social Impact
Long-time readers know that my mission is driven by social impact. I have no interest in having my money working merely to make more. That is boring. I’m all about changing the world by improving health, supporting the environment or alleviating poverty/improving social justice. In this arena, I also think about the local community. That inspires me more when the community is underserved, as in some urban neighborhoods and other rural ones. Employment stats and related data give great clues when a local investment really matters.
Low Minimum investment
I write with ordinary, everyday investors in mind. The sort of people I consider would find it a stretch to invest $5,000 in Reg CF in a year. At my pace of a deal per week, that leaves room for only $100 per deal, on average. So, I don’t consider businesses with minimum investment options above $151—despite the temptation.
Solid Prospects
There is a lot to say here. I’ll be brief. Reg CF investing is risky. Spray and pray is not a valid diversification strategy. The financial metrics must be scrutinized. With an equity investment, deal terms matter. A lot. Nothing is more important than valuation. Did you know that savvy investors consider a well-structured preferred share to be worth five to ten times more than common shares in the same company? A fair valuation for preferred is not a fair valuation for common.
For debt deals—followers know I love debt deals—we have to be sure that repayment is reasonably likely. If the return is “only” ten percent, you want that money to be highly likely. Figuring out what is likely takes more than watching a clever video and glancing at an offering page.
And let’s be clear about pairing impact and profit. In my mind, they are inseparable. If you want your investment to make a difference, that impact will likely end (if it ever started) if the business fails. Impact in a for-profit business requires profits. Furthermore, the profit you make can be invested again for more impact—but only if you get a return. Finally, as you prove to yourself that impact can be profitable, you’ll be ready to move more of your assets into impact investing.
Smart People Disagree
Finally, I want to be clear that smart people often disagree. For our live pitch events, we have three independent judges vote on their pick among four companies. It is rare that they all agree on which is the best. Experience, education and deep analysis don’t guarantee everyone would reach the same answer.
That is why I wouldn’t tell you not to invest in any of the new offerings this week. My colleague Chandan posted the list here. Check it out. You may find some you love. But you’re on your own this week. :)
