Here’s A Way You Can Make A Difference In The Life Of A Child
For decades, unaccompanied minors have been arriving at the United States border as refugees or seeking asylum. Once processed, they quickly need to find foster homes where they can receive the support they need to thrive in their new country.
Catholic Community Services of Utah is the agency that manages foster care placements in Utah–one of only 13 participating states. At the moment, the organization is looking to find 90 more families in Utah to host arriving foster children.

We’ll be discussing foster care for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum:
For nearly 30 years, Catholic Community Services of Utah has provided specialized foster care services to hundreds of unaccompanied children from around the world. These children entered the U.S. without their parents or an adult to care for them. There is a need for foster families to foster these children. with Aden Batar.
How are you personally affected by foster care for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum?
Professionally I manage the program. Personally, I came to the U.S as a refugee and I have a passion for helping these unaccompanied minors find a place in a loving and caring parent’s home who will open their hearts.
What is your take on foster care for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum?
This is the right things to do by helping a refugee minor to get a life. Many of these children lost their parents and loved ones. Instead of them growing without caregivers and losing hope, we have a moral obligation to help them.

Aden Batar is the Director of Migration and Refugee Services for Catholic Community Services (CCS). He is the first former refugee to ever hold such position in Utah. He has worked in this field for more than 25 years. He serves on the Utah State Refugee Board of Advisors, University of Utah Alumni Board, and Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission. He is the former President of the Utah Islamic Society. He is also the founder of Somali Community Services of Utah. He holds a Law Degree from Somali National University and Masters of Public Administration from the University of Utah. He is an Immigration attorney by training. Batar is a former refugee from Somalia that was resettled through CCS in 1994. He speaks Somali, Italian, Some Arabic and Kiswahili.
