Help Research to Beat Skin & Lung Cancer
Matthias Piesche is a young scientist working to cure cancer.. He is raising money on GoFundMe to advance his research. Recently, I caught up with Matthias to learn more about the effort; here’s what he told me:
What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?
Too many people die through cancer. Investigating novel ideas is important to find better treatment strategies. However, the funding situation through the traditional funding agencies is bad, especially for young scientists. Budget cuts and reducing support for young scientists from 18% (1983) to 3% (2010) results in losing great young scientists for academia. Therefore, great ideas will never be evaluated. With my campaign I want to raise money to investigate a novel approach to beat skin and lung cancer. It will combine standard cancer treatments with immunotherapy. This combined therapy functions similar to a vaccine: An individual’s immune system gets stimulated to develop immunity to its cancer cells with the result that more cancer patients will survive their cancer.
How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?
I am planning to raise 50,000 EURO. The money will be spend solely for laboratory expenses (e.g.,chemicals, cell culture, plastic ware) to evaluate the novel treatment idea.
Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?
Cancer still needs a cure. With this project I want to help to find a cure for cancer patients that one day the diagnosis of cancer will not be a death sentence anymore.
