Female Entrepreneurs Unveil Nepalese Business Owners To A New Wave Of Tourists
Dedicated to the cause, social entrepreneurs Luna Shrestha Thakur and Catrin Froehlich are empowering small business heroes by giving tourists the opportunity to witness a different side to traveling Nepal. Their Hidden Journey’s tours provide a chance for these small business owners to reach a new audience and share knowledge with like-minded travelers from across the globe.
It’s no secret that Nepal is in a rebuilding phase following the earthquakes earlier this year. However, prior to this setback the two had been working hard on their Hidden Journey’s program, and after a hiatus have witnessed a pick up in the interest of the tours again. They both hope that this will be a catalyst to allowing their great work to flourish once more and to accelerate the rejuvenation of the entrepreneurs of the area.
Shrestha and Froehlich founded Hidden journeys after they traveled Nepal in 2011 and were amazed by the passion and determination of the individuals they met. They spent days listening to stories of struggles and of great triumphs.
“We learnt about means to empower rural communities and the ways widows would overcome stigma through cooperatives. We learnt about the transformation of a Maoist supporter into an entrepreneur and how an abused housewife started a knitting business” Says Froehlich
This experience confirmed their believe in self-empowerment through social enterprises as opposed to the typical aid message that the country is so often subject to.
“The Hidden journey’s idea stems from the knowledge that economic marginalization was one of the root causes of conflict in Nepal. So through social entrepreneurship promotion we want to contribute to more economic inclusiveness, and to the development of Nepal.” Says Shrestha
The program has been an inspiration to all who have traveled over the past two years with over a dozen different tour routes organized and many other events for empowerment staged.
Former visitor and founder of The Edulift Academy Tenzin Sonam Gonsar said “I was inspired by people encompassing the spectrum of social entrepreneurship, from early stages to acceleration of sustainable enterprises. The tour has allowed me to network, connect and be inspired by other entrepreneurs.”
The ’10 day tour’ on November 18 will offer participants a chance to experience eco-building and traditional farming, learning about natural systems and architectural heritage conservation, to name a few. Culminating in a two day international enterprise conference where they open to discuss the concepts around Social Entrepreneurship with practitioners, academicians and other experts.
