Crowdfunding Campaign to Support LGBTQ Asylum Seekers
Crowdfunder: Katie Sgarro of AsylumConnect
Campaign type: We’re looking for donations to support a cause
Campaign link: https://igg.me/at/taz2aJp3CT4
Twitter: @AsylumConnect
Goal: $9,000
Progress: $1,775
Project: AsylumConnect is creating the first ever online resource database for LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S. Under the current hostile administration, our ability to point queer asylum seekers towards safe, LGBTQ-friendly resources is more important than ever.
We’re now partnering with Y combinator-backed 501(c)(3) One Degree, a technology-driven nonprofit helping low-income families access resources to achieve social and economic mobility, to build a national version of our resource catalog. Our catalog enables LGBTQ asylum seekers to safely integrate in their new home through providing a platform for them to access resource information and referrals to meet their needs in key areas, including: housing, legal, food, medical, mental health, social support, employment, and education.
Use of funds: If we meet our campaign goal, we can launch our new resource catalog powered by One Degree by the end of November 2017. We will use the tax-deductible donations from this campaign to finance the professional technical assistance needed to launch our new catalog. Together, we can ensure that all LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S. have the information they need to finally live safe, healthy, and authentic lives.
Anecdote: “Global events are forcing more asylum seekers to feel unbearable conditions in their home countries to come to the U.S. … Thank you for the efforts and support.” – David*, a LGBTQ asylum seeker who helped test the resource catalog
