For nearly two decades, Christie’s Place has been a refuge and a resource for women living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego. While the organization receives funding from a variety of sources, some of the funding comes with constraints and limitations.
Recently, Christie’s Place raised money via CaringCrowd, Johnson & Johnson’s global public health crowdfunding site, because it allowed the nonprofit to fill some critical gaps in its funding so that the organization can continue serving its community.
Executive Director Rhea Van Brocklin noted that J&J matched donations up to $250 during the campaign, dramatically easing the effort required to hit the funding goal of $5,000 in the most recent campaign. Over the years, Christie’s Place has raised over $14,000 on CaringCrowd.

Rhea Van Brocklin’s bio:
With over 18 years of experience in the HIV field, Ms. Van Brocklin has developed, implemented, and evaluated numerous HIV prevention and care programs under CDC, HRSA, SAMHSA, and state and local funding. These programs include piloting rapid HIV testing during outreach interactions, implementing evidence-based community-level interventions among high-risk populations in rural communities, and developing capacity-building HIV prevention trainings for faculty of alternative and court-assigned community high schools. Ms. Van Brocklin’s experience in the field of HIV prevention and care has been exhibited not only through her direct work, but also at various conferences such as the United States Conference on AIDS (2014), National HIV Prevention Conference (2011), and the International Conference on HIV Stigma (2011). From 2009 to 2011, Ms. Van Brocklin served as the Chairperson of the Iowa HIV Anti-Stigma Alliance, a statewide coalition dedicated to reducing the impact of stigma among people living with HIV.
During her tenure as Executive Director of the AIDS Project of Central Iowa, the state’s largest stand-alone AIDS service organization, Ms. Van Brocklin led the agency in 2012 through an integral merger process with a local Federally Qualified Health Center to ensure long term survival of its life-saving services. Since moving to San Diego in 2012, Ms. Van Brocklin has continued serving the HIV community through her role as a Program Manager with Vista Community Clinic’s HIV Department and her involvement in the San Diego County’s “Getting to Zero” Initiative. In May 2019, Ms. Van Brocklin became the newly-appointed Executive Director of Christie’s Place.
