Cherysh America Foundation Deploys Solar-Powered Microgrids To Improve Global Health
CaringCrowd.org, by Johnson & Johnson Global Public Health, is a sponsor of the Your Mark on the World Center and GoodCrowd.info.
When Carolynn Cameron was prevented from adopting a child in Uganda by a change in the law, she quickly shifted her focus and found another way to serve the people there.
Cameron, a volunteer leader at Cherysh America Foundation, recently raised $50,000 to deploy an advanced, solar-powered microgrid at an orphanage there. The system is designed to be safe and sustainable for many years.
She raised the money on CaringCrowd, a global health crowdfunding site sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. Every project is screened by a panel of experts to confirm that each will have an impact on global health. The site is made available as a public service; J&J derives no revenue from projects funded on the site.

What is the purpose of your crowdfunding campaign?
Together, we will develop a modern electricity system and use related data science methods to enhance pediatric HIV healthcare management and educational systems for a small Ugandan village. This effort will help meet the immediate needs of the many HIV+ orphans as well as help develop them for a long and productive life through education and skills development.
Our starting point is Sangaalo Baby orphanage, neighboring Nsenge village school and church in Jinga. The three establishments are led by Madame Damalie and her husband Pastor David who provide care and a safe space for children aged 0-6 years old affected by HIV. David and Damalie have dedicated their lives to helping orphaned children and this is our chance to help them not only help the kids survive, but thrive. The Johnson & Johnson Global Public Health initiative 100% matched all donations up to $250 USD.

CherYsh developed a transformational micro energy business model that brings digital energy to low-income communities at lower cost and enables additional new benefits of economic opportunity. Our model has empirical technological and financial risk evidence. Once operationalized in U.S. & India with low-income communities, it can validate the feasibility of a new low-income market segment for investment by private capital. CherYsh America Foundation’s initiative in validating and expanding the proposed model is backed by the expertise of leading scientists, top-tier industrial conglomerate manufacturing grids, a major U.S. rural electric cooperative and a global nonprofit organization focused on low-income housing.
The CherYsh plans to deploy micro energy business model in low-income communities which will enable a) sustainable energy production controlled by digital capabilities b) lower cost of electricity c) developing entrepreneurial opportunities in local communities as micro energy operators d) developing ancillary electrical services within the community as a business e) providing new aggregate and individual social profile identity data in digital form for third market operators for revenue generation f) which thereby provides increased access to capital g) as to develop economic opportunities which h) increase gender participation.
The proposed micro energy business model is generalizable and is currently sponsored for field trials by a leading industrial firm, which is currently developing related critical technologies and engineering services. We have also collaborated with software providers who build intelligent energy software.
The business model also provides a baseline to evaluate related critical management competencies, which will guide future low-income electricity cooperatives how to manage micro energy electric systems. This model when implemented in low-income communities can provide the necessary information to motivate private capital to direct investments in this marginalized market segment.
