Sophia Monaghan used CaringCrowd to raise the money she needed to live nine months in Ethiopia researching the plight of women with mental illness. Sophia is a researcher and project manager for Project Mercy.

Since I was young, I have had a vested interest in pursuing a health-related career of some sort. My inspiration arose when a representative from Doctors without Borders (or MSF) spoke at my middle school. Their mission statement to help those in the greatest need globally, combined with their values of medical ethics, impartiality, bearing witness, and accountability, made an impact. Being conversationally fluent in French also added to my desire to work for the French-based company.

From that time on, I pursued biological courses throughout high school and my 4 years of university. My degree was Human Biology with a focus in global health and human rights, with a minor in French that demonstrates my passion for working overseas. Although I have not concretely decided if I will follow a path through medical school, I’m looking to take a year to explore what it would be like to live and work in a developing country and put myself in an unfamiliar environment and culture. I also am passionate about being part of or creating research that will have a genuine impact on the community and be implemented on a larger scale to make a difference in some way. I recently developed a strong interest in and passion for the plight of mental health in developing countries in Africa, and see potential for a lot of research and change.

In the past, my work experience has been split into two areas. The first included coaching and tutoring, necessitating an ability to form relationships with patrons and work with small children to teach them how to swim, or coaching them at a higher level. My people skills are rich and well-rounded as a result of these varied interactions. The second has been research and literature review, which demands organization and focused passion to pursue results in a systematic manner. I enjoy working with younger kids and hope to instill in them a similar desire to pursuing medical careers and attaining the highest degree of success they are capable of, but I also enjoy the intellectual drive I feel when working on a research topic or project. Moreover, I have been an emotional support system for both parents and children through athletic or academic struggles, something that I feel accelerated the growth of my emotional intelligence and ability to connect with others and understand their stories.

As a Division 1 athlete, I am organized and diligent, used to waking up early, and have spent much of my life working with others and fostering close relationships with team members. I am willing and open to gain any and all experience in a health-related field, and looking to dedicate an entire year to the pursuit of a single project, whatever it may be. My passions are varied and diverse, but an overarching theme that I gravitate towards is that of helping others and making a difference in one way or another.
