Last night I retired at 67 with $274,004.
My goal was $1 million. I fell well short. Luckily, it was only a game, and I can play again. That’s the point.
The game is called Fantasy Impact League. It’s free, and it lets you live a whole investing life in about 20 minutes without risking a dime. It’s live now in early access, and I’m looking for beta testers.
In the game, careful impact-minded players who start at 30 reach $1 million about 6 times in 10. Players who pick at random make it about 1 time in 4. Which one will you be?
How it works
You pick a life, like a new graduate, a mid-career nurse or a late starter like me. Each year a handful of fictional offerings land on your desk. A climate startup raising on a SAFE. A neighborhood bakery borrowing at 9.75%. A taproom sharing its revenue. An affordable housing project paying a preferred return.
Each deal shows scores for management, deal terms, prospects and impact, its red and green flags, and the odds for deals like it. Then you invest, look closer or pass.
The game plays by the real rules. The legal investment limits apply, and your money is locked up for at least a year. Companies raise new rounds, convert your SAFE into shares, get acquired, limp along as zombies or quietly fail. Loans pay you back, or they don’t. A few big winners end up carrying the whole portfolio.
Then there’s the twist. Keep investing in impact and the world around you stays steady. Ignore it and the bills come due: floods, tax hikes, interest rates spiking after a distant war, a layoff that freezes your investing for a year or two. It’s the game’s way of showing how externalities eventually come home to roost.
Why this matters
Reg CF lets nearly anyone invest in startups and local businesses. Few people do. Most have never seen a deal, and the first one is scary. A game lets you see dozens of deals and make your mistakes for free. I think that practice gets people ready to invest for real. If impact investing is fun, it can be for everyone. That would change our industry.
Be an early-access beta tester
Here’s what I’m asking:
Play one life. It’s free, it works on your phone or computer, and you don’t need an account. Short on time? Tap “Save the game here for later.” We’ll email you a link to pick up where you left off, plus two reminders.
Tell me what you think. Use the feedback box on the last screen, or reply to this email. What confused you? What was fun? What made you want to play again? I read every note.
Beat my $274,004. Try “Today’s life,” where everyone gets the same deals that day, and reply with your number.
A few honest notes. Every company and portal in the game is fictional. It’s an educational simulation, not investment advice. Real Reg CF investments are risky and hard to sell, so a real retirement plan shouldn’t depend on them alone.
Can you retire with $1 million? I couldn’t, at least not on my first try. I’d love to see you do better.
