Building Ambient AI That Deserves Our Trust
ARTHIA AI founder Eric Coury explains why privacy, human agency and behavioral science must be built into AI from the beginning—not added later.
Ambient AI promises to move artificial intelligence beyond the chatbot, making it present in the moments when people most need guidance. For Eric Coury, founder and CEO of ARTHIA AI, that promise comes with an equally important question: How do we make technology this intimate genuinely worthy of our trust?
In this SuperCrowd Voices interview, Coury explains how a roleplay feature built for real estate agents evolved into a much larger vision for an AI mentor designed to help people navigate difficult conversations, decisions and personal challenges.
He also describes ARTHIA’s emphasis on privacy, safety and human agency, including an architecture intended to advise rather than decide and to become less necessary as users grow. Coury’s journey—from classroom teacher to solo founder with eleven patent applications pending—also offers a broader entrepreneurial lesson: deep understanding of a problem can matter more than conventional credentials when building something genuinely new and consequential.
What inspired you to start your company?
I built a roleplay feature for my previous SaaS startup, that let real estate agents rehearse hard conversations before having them. Watching agents use it, I realized the tool wasn’t really about real estate — it was about the moment right before someone says something difficult. I started mapping what a system would need to understand to be present for that moment in real life, not just in rehearsal. That’s when I realized I wasn’t looking at a feature anymore. I was looking at the infrastructure ambient AI would need.
What problem are you solving, and who benefits most from your solution?
Most people go through the moments that shape their lives — a hard conversation, a critical decision, a struggle they’re navigating alone — without anyone in their corner who really knows them. ARTHIA is built to be that presence at scale: a mentor and advisor that knows you specifically — when you need to hear something, what you need to hear, and how to say it in a way that actually reaches you. Not generic advice. Not a chatbot waiting for a prompt. A behavioral intelligence and safety layer that makes millions of people a little more capable, a little more present, in the moments that matter most — built ethically from the ground up, so the same system that could help you is never allowed to exploit you.
What makes your company stand out in your space or industry?
We filed the architecture first — eleven patents pending, covering the questions any ambient AI company will eventually have to answer. But the deeper differentiator is what we built into the foundation, not on top of it: safety and privacy aren’t policies we could change later, they’re the architecture itself. Zero raw audio ever stored. The system advises but never decides for you. And it’s designed to make itself less necessary as you grow — the opposite of how most AI is built. Most AI companies bolt behavioral language onto a model after the fact. We built the model around the behavioral science — behavioral science manifest in code, not code masquerading as behavioral science.
What’s next for your company—what are you most excited to build or accomplish in the future?
Right now we’re converting our provisional patents and completing our production platform. But the thing I’m most excited about is the scale of what this becomes: not a tool for one industry, but a genuine companion, present in someone’s life the way a great mentor is — someone who knows your patterns, believes in your growth, and helps you become more capable, not more dependent. Done right, this is technology that could quietly improve millions of lives, one well-timed word at a time. I want to build the version of ambient AI that actually deserves to be that close to people — which is why the ethics were built in from day one, not added after the fact.
What’s one lesson you’ve learned on your entrepreneurial journey that might help others?
The insight that mattered most didn’t come from a technical background — it came from years spent understanding people, first as a classroom teacher. When I saw the problem clearly enough, I filed all eleven patents myself, alone, without a law firm, because I understood it precisely enough to describe it. I didn’t wait until I had the “right” credentials or the perfect team. I started with what I actually had — clarity about the problem — and built from there. Don’t assume the credential you’re missing is the one that actually matters. Sometimes the outsider’s view is the whole advantage.
Why might someone want to learn more about your offering or follow your progress?
Because this is a solo founder, 11 patents pending, building something with real stakes — a technology that could either quietly help millions of people or quietly exploit them, depending entirely on how it’s built. We’re choosing the harder path on purpose. Anyone who cares where AI is actually headed, or wants to see what an ethics-first approach to ambient AI looks like in practice, will find this worth watching closely.
Eric Coury’s Bio
Eric Coury is the founder and CEO of ARTHIA AI, Inc. PBC, building the behavioral intelligence and safety layer for ambient AI. A former classroom teacher with a background in sociology and education, Eric filed all eleven of ARTHIA’s patent-pending applications himself, alone, in six weeks — believing the hardest problems in ambient AI are human behavior problems, not engineering ones. He previously built two companies without outside capital, one past $50 million in gross sales volume. ARTHIA is a Public Benefit Corporation, built on the belief that AI should serve people — not the other way around.
