Blue Frontiers And Startup Societies Foundation Announce A $100,000 Prize To Bring Sustainable Floating Islands To Host Nations
Press Release – WASHINGTON DC – Blue Frontiers, the company building the world’s first sustainable floating islands in French Polynesia, in partnership with Startup Societies Foundation, is launching a contest to encourage the creation of additional Special Economic Zones in different parts of the world that are concerned about sea level rise. The winning entrepreneur will be awarded with $100,000 USD plus the possibility to build a seastead in their home country. Nine additional proposals will win an all-expenses paid trip to the fully-operational floating pavillion in the Netherlands, built by Blue21, the architects of Blue Frontiers.
Joe McKinney, Founder of Startup Societies Foundation, says, “The idea is to encourage innovative entrepreneurs, anywhere in the world, to build government and community support to create a SeaZone, a floating Special Economic Zone and bring $60 million in investment to their country.” This contest is in line with Blue Frontiers’ primary goal of creating fully self-sufficient, sustainable floating cities with special legal frameworks based on blockchain technology, favorable to floating communities.
Past moves to introduce Special Economic Zone reforms often have led to frustration. Many private SEZ developers have plunged into pre-chosen opportunities, only to encounter delays and unexpected setbacks in obtaining the regulations needed to develop one. Usually they lack local contributions and participation. In contrast, this contest by the Blue Frontiers Global initiative, unlike many other projects for Special Economic Zones, encourages the creation and adoption of economic incentives for autonomous settlements on the ocean in a bottom-up manner. It also incentivizes the development of land zones that can propel the development of opportunities by providing resources beneficial to the creation of concessions. “Rather than preselect a location on which to concentrate reform efforts, Blue Frontiers wants to open this opportunity by offering a prize to a local individual or group that manages to compete to meet the threshold conditions” Marc Collins, co-founder of Blue Frontiers. The final goal is decentralize the creation of Special Economic Zones worldwide.
Throughout the contest, Blue Frontiers will provide support to participants. It will make liaisons between contestants and global experts on SEZs in order to create the necessary conditions for floating communities to flourish. Blue Frontiers envisions a world in which local allies seed the creation of many new Hong Kongs spread worldwide.
