Author, Activist Trainer Shares Insights For Driving Change
For decades, Sam Daley-Harris has quietly gone about changing the world. Much of the global success in eradicating extreme poverty can be credited in part to him and his leadership at RESULTS. His secret has been to train and empower ordinary citizens to be effective activists.
He helps organizations learn the secrets to empowering a group’s membership to act independently and effectively to drive change. This requires organizations to train their membership with the skills they need and at the same time to step back and allow the membership to act on their behalf–even when members might muddle the message.
His approach has proven effective not only with RESULTS on poverty but also with the Citizens Climate Lobby. Today, Sam is focused on a new organization called Civic Courage, teaching other organizations how to empower their members.

Expert Tips:
Tip 1: The three main messages of my presentation are: 1) you can make a profound difference on big issues with your voice as a citizen, 2) you probably haven’t because of your sense of powerlessness and resignation about politics, especially federal politics, 3) if you connect with an organization that is committed to disolving the powerlessness, you can make a profound difference with your voice as a citizen.
Tip 2: Most groups that do advocacy are not committed to dissolving their members sense of powerlessness. Groups like the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, the Quaker Lobby FCNL, and American Promise’s work to get money out of politics are examples of groups that truly empower their members.
Tip 3: If a group is not helping their members move out of their comfort zones with encouragement and support, is not encouraging their members to have breakthroughs, then the group is not committed to dissolving the powerlessness.
